Last Transmission: Sol 1440 – is a fictional story that draws inspiration from the first-person tweets of NASA’s InSight lander during its mission to Mars. These messages connected readers to the lander’s scientific work and also anthropomorphized the spacecraft. As a result, many of InSight’s followers, myself included, experienced a sense of sadness when the lander transmitted its final message in December 2022.

I originally conceived of this piece as a work of flash fiction, but the log-style communications and my discovery of space sonifications led me to choose audio as its medium. The finished work adopts the form of an audio transmission log and uses sound to evoke feelings of anticipation and excitement, but also the emptiness and distance that I imagine are a part of the exploration of space. Very Grumpy Crocodile – a playful collection of five short stories for children, following the small adventures of an irritable crocodile and the animals who share his world. Through simple encounters with monkey, bird, spider, and puma, each episode explores everyday frustrations and small moments of kindness. The episodes are brief and lighthearted, reflecting on friendship, cooperation, and the many ways even a very grumpy crocodile can find his way back to a better mood.

I created the Very Grumpy Crocodile podcast for kids ages 4-7. Listen to Crocodile’s adventures with your little ones on Apple Podcasts | SoundCloud | Spotify, then visit the website for printable coloring pages of crocodile and his friends.
